Its contrasts between the old and the new, the traditional and modern, East and West, have lured millions the world over to this mystifying kingdom. Our Japan Unescorted program is an exciting and totally different concept designed for travelers who want to experience the best of Japan at their own pace. Your tour includes a private guide on your first day in Tokyo to help you tailor-make your very own Japan expedition as well as to teach you all there is to know about traveling on your own in Japan.



Day 1. Arrive Tokyo
Upon arrival at Narita Airport, proceed to your hotel in Tokyo by airport limousine bus for next three nights accommodation.

Day 2. Tokyo
Meet your Japan guide for an orientation and walking tour by subway, learning how to explore and enjoy Tokyo unescorted. Visits include Tsukiji Fish Market, Meiji Shrine, Sensoji Temple and its Nakamise Shopping Street and Akihabara (time permitting).

Day 3. Tokyo
You are free to explore this fascinating cosmopolitan city on your own.

Day 4. Tokyo/Matsumoto
Depart Tokyo by rail (approx. 3 hours) via Nagano to the castle town of Matsumoto. Explore Nagano’s Zenko-Ji Temple and the impressive Matsumoto Castle on your own. Check-in to your hotel in Matsumoto for your overnight accommodations. (B)

Day 5. Matsumoto/Takayama
This morning, board the Nohi Bus* on a 2-hour scenic mountain ride to Takayama, a quaint little town steeped in Samurai history nestled in the Japan Alps. Proceed to your hotel in Takayama by taxi or hotel shuttle bus.

Day 6. Takayama
Free day to explore this and many nearby picturesque towns and traditional villages. Visits to the morning market, Sannomachi Street in Old Town, Shirakawa-go (UNESCO World Heritage Site) are highly recommended.

Day 7. Takayama / Kanazawa
Travel by commuter train to Toyama, transfer to the limited express train to Kanazawa, a well preserved fortress town home to one of Japan’s three most famous gardens – Kenrokuen Garden. Check-in at your hotel in at Hotel Nikko Kanazawa  located adjacent to Kanazawa Station for your overnight accommodation.

Day 8. Kanazawa / Kyoto
Enjoy a day exploring this seaside town strolling the narrow streets, quaint tea parlors, the bustling Omicho Food Market, and of course, Kenrokuen Garden. Later in the day, continue by rail to Kyoto (approx. 2 hours). Check-in at  Royal Park Hotel Kyoto located approximately 15 minutes from Kyoto Station by taxi or subway.

Day 9. Kyoto
Steeped in history and tradition, there are over 2000 temples and shrines as well as nearby Nara and Osaka for you to explore.

Day 10. Kyoto
Full day free at leisure to relax and further explore beautiful Kansai prefecture.

Day 11. Return Home
Transfer to Osaka Airport (Itami or Kansai Airport) by shuttle van for your departure flight home.

*Nohi bus fare between Matsumoto & Takayama not covered by Japan Rail Pass. Separate bus ticket (included in package) will be issued locally in Japan.
